Existing Arc Ratings Protect Against DC Arc Flashes
Groundbreaking, peer-reviewed research, published by Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), confirms that existing arc-rated PPE provides the same level of protection for direct current (DC) arc flashes as it does for alternating current (AC). Testing of multiple arc-rated fabrics revealed no significant difference in performance between AC and DC arc conditions, reinforcing the reliability of current arc ratings. Key Findings:
Consistent Protection Across AC & DC: four most used CAT 2 woven fabrics and tri-laminate arc flash suit fabric showed no meaningful performance differences.
Proven Reliability: Minor variations were well within standard testing ranges, confirming that current arc ratings remain valid for DC arc hazards.
No Need for New DC-Specific Ratings: Existing arc-rated PPE continues to offer protection as DC infrastructure expands.
