Arc Week Season 6, Ep. 5 – Belief: “Fabric Softener & Lint Ruin Arc-rated PPE Effectiveness.”

August 22, 2025

Tyndale presents Arc Week: a unique, week-long educational look at the world of arc flash hazards through the lens of Shark Week. Join Scott Margolin – our dedicated technical expert by day and passionate shark enthusiast in his free time – for engaging, memorable parallels that bring important lessons about risk protection and PPE to life. Catch it all: Season 1, Season 2, Season 3, Season 4, Season 5, Season 6.

Over the years, concerns about fabric softener, flammable lint, and laundry methods have circulated widely in the electrical safety industry. But are these concerns valid—or are they BS?

The Claim:

“Fabric softener is flammable and builds up on arc-rated and flame resistant (AR / FR) clothing, reducing protective performance.”

The Test Setup

  • Control Garment: Laundered once without fabric softener
  • Softener Garment: Laundered 50 times with fabric softener

Both were exposed to identical arc flash conditions.

The Arc Flash Result

  • Control Garment: Did not ignite or sustain after-flame
  • Softener Garment: Did not ignite or sustain after-flame

Side-by-side, there was no significant visual or performance difference between the two.

While our tests show accidental cycles with fabric softener won’t ruin your AR / FR clothing, manufacturers (including Tyndale) do not recommend intentional use. Always follow the garment’s care instructions.

The Claim:

“Lint from street clothes in your dryer can transfer to FR garments, creating a flammable hazard.”

The Test Setup

We piled an excessive amount of household lint onto an FR garment and subjected it to an arc.

The Arc Flash Result

There was no sustained flame. Lint’s high surface area and low volume cause it to vaporize instantly during an arc, leaving no fuel to burn the garment or harm the wearer.

So lint on your AR / FR won’t contribute to injury in an arc flash incident, but it’s still important to clean your dryer’s lint trap regularly – a buildup of lint on your clothing can indicate excess lint in your dryer, creating a home fire hazard.

Legit or bull$#!t? This claim is 100% BS.

  • The Takeaway on Fabric Softener: Fabric softener did not compromise protection. This is backed by peer-reviewed IEEE research which confirmed that repeated exposure to softener does not reduce flame resistance.
  • The Takeaway on Lint: Lint poses no measurable risk to the flame resistance of FR clothing—even in unrealistic amounts.
