Bug-Repellent FR Clothing: Your Shield Against Insect Hazards
June 28, 2024
When working outdoors, protection can mean guarding against thermal hazards like arc flashes and flash fires. However, it’s also important to have garments that defend against smaller – but also dangerous – threats posed by insects. At Tyndale, we understand the importance of comprehensive safety, which is why we’re proud to offer Perimeter Insect Guard™ arc-rated and flame resistant (AR / FR) clothing.
Why Offer Bug-Repellent FR Clothing?
Our Perimeter Insect Guard™ clothing is made of fabric treated with permethrin, a proven insect repellent that bonds with the fibers to deter and eliminate pests like disease-carrying mosquitoes and ticks. Brought to Tyndale by Front Line Fabrics (FLF), makers of Tyndale’s exclusive FRMC® inherent FR fabrics, the durable repellent guards against insects for over 50 launderings. Unlike conventional insect repellents containing DEET – which should never be used with AR / FR clothing due to their flammability – permethrin is non-flammable and applied directly to the fabric before the clothing is assembled.
Benefits of Permethrin-Treated Garments
Tyndale’s Perimeter Insect Guard™ AR / FR clothing provides comprehensive insect protection – no need to spray or apply repellent before heading to an insect-prone job site. Benefits include:
- Effective Protection: Permethrin is highly effective against various insects, including disease-carrying ticks responsible for illnesses like Lyme disease and mosquitoes carrying West Nile virus.
- Safety Assured: Safety tested since the 1970’s, permethrin-treated clothing is recognized by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Centers for Disease Control (CDC) as a safe and effective method of preventing insect-transmitted diseases. Data shows that permethrin is poorly absorbed through the skin, so human exposure from wearing permethrin-treated clothes is low.
- Long-lasting Performance: Unlike topical repellents that require frequent reapplication, permethrin-treated clothing retains its efficacy through multiple launderings, making it a reliable choice for long-term protection.
Similar to untreated FR garments, Perimeter Insect Guard™-treated FR garments should not be laundered with bleach, bleach alternatives, fabric softener, or starch. The EPA advises washing permethrin-treated garments separately from untreated AR / FR clothing. Factory-treated garments do not shrink during laundering; any potential shrinkage occurs during the permethrin treatment process itself. This adds an additional benefit, ensuring that permethrin-treated garments are delivered to the end user already pre-shrunk.
