Understanding the Difference Between NFPA® 2112 & 2113 Standards

Two safety standards well-known in the Flame Resistant (FR) clothing industry are NFPA® 2112 and NFPA® 2113. While you may have heard of them, most important is understanding the difference between the two. NFPA 2112 specifies performance requirements of the FR fabrics, while NFPA® 2113 is a companion standard to NFPA® 2112, and covers selection, care, use, and maintenance requirements for garments. Thus, NFPA® 2113 is an important standard for ensuring the safety of employees wearing NFPA® 2112 compliant garments. 

NFPA® 2112: Standard of Flame-Resistant Clothing for Protection of Industrial Personnel Against Short-Duration Thermal Exposures from Fire

This standard was developed to specify the minimum performance requirements and test methods for FR fabrics and components for use in industries at risk from short-duration thermal exposures from fire. This includes the oil and gas industry where employees routinely work in areas where these hazards exist.

NFPA 2112 establishes specific criteria for testing garments using primarily the ASTM F1930 (manikin) test and the ASTM D6413 (vertical flame) test. In total, NFPA 2112 outlines 17 tests, including four pass/fail tests: flame resistance, manikin testing, thermal shrinkage resistance, and heat resistance. The other tests are report-only; that is, data is collected and reported, but it is not used to pass or fail a fabric. NFPA® 2113: Standard on the Selection, Care, Use, and Maintenance of Flame Resistant Garments for Protection of Industrial Personal Against Flash Fire

This standard provides guidance for the selection, use, care, and maintenance of FR clothing with a 2112 label. The NFPA® 2113 standard focuses on proper selection criteria based on a hazard risk assessment and training on how to properly wear FR garments in the field, by offering recommendations on best practices to follow.
