How to Prepare for El Niño with the Right FR Rainwear

This is the first post in a three-part series reviewing the 2015-16 El Niño outlook and arc-rated flame resistant rainwear options available to outdoor workers facing arc flash or flash fire hazards. In this post we explore projections for the 2015-16 El Niño phenomenon; in our next post, we explore advanced rainwear options, while in our final post we feature some cost-effective rainwear solutions that are tried and true.

A periodic shift in trade wind patterns across the Pacific Ocean that impacts the distribution of ocean water and influences weather patterns, El Niño is known to bring heavy rains and flooding in the southern United States.

It’s important to understand that El Niño is not caused by human activities, and is a phenomenon that has occurred long before the discussion about climate change.  Independent of climate change conversations, NOAA issued an El Niño advisory in March 2015, meaning that El Niño conditions are observed and expected to continue. Current NOAA projections expect El Niño to continue through winter 2015 and likely into spring 2016.
Predictions show that this year’s El Niño may be unusually strong—likely the strongest since 1997-98, which triggered flooding in California and the southeast, tornadoes in Florida, and an ice storm in the northeast.

How to deal with all of the wet weather forecasted?  Arc-rated flame resistant (FR) rainwear is protection that is commonly overlooked but is critical to comfort in wet work conditions. In fact, based on these predictions by The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), FR rainwear may be particularly important in Winter 2015-16 and in early Spring 2016 for outdoor workers facing arc flash or flash fire hazards.
